Print Black And White To Save Ink

Do you ever print out a website, like say for driving directions? What about if you’re printing out a document with a little bit of letterhead on it or some clipart? Chances are that you’re likely to find yourself in a positions where you’re printing color when you could be printing black and white. If you find yourself printing a lot of color, you might be spending a lot more money on your printing than you need to.

Think about it for a minute. Whenever you print something you should ask yourself, does this need to be printed in color? If so, why? Is it because the original version had some color on it, if it’s a website do you want it to look pretty like the original? Perhaps the map is easier to read in color.

Those are all perfectly reasonable reasons for printing something in color, but is is really necessary to print in color? Grayscale printing is usually good enough that you have plenty of contrast in printing with just black. So why use color?

What happens if you print more in black and white? Well, most printers separate the black from the rest of the colors because people print a lot of text. Do you remember art class when you would combine red and blue to make green? Or yellow and red to make orange? Your printer does pretty much the same thing.

Most printers have some kind of red, yellow, and blue ink that they combine to make the various colors. Thus, if they have to make a dark green, they use a lot of blue and a lot of yellow. That’s two different inks to make one color.

Compare that to when you print in grayscale. You are just using different amounts of black for each pixel. That adds up to a very large potential ink savings just by printing in black and white instead of color.

Now, this does man that you will use more black ink than color ink, but that’s the beauty of this idea. Black ink tends to be a bit cheaper than color ink. It depends on the manufacturer, but it’s usually like 10-50% cheaper.

So, in short by switching to black and white printing, you can use less ink and at the same time you can buy your ink for cheaper. That’s a double victory. What more can you ask for?
